Jun 27, 2016 at 1:58 comment added Keshav Srinivasan @Tezz Well, Apsaras are an unusual case, but at least for marriage between one human and another the man has to be older than the woman. And Revati is also an unusual case, because her biological age didn't match her chronological age. But in any case, it's not just a suggestion, it's a firm rule described in numerous Dharma Shastras.
Jun 27, 2016 at 1:30 comment added Tezz @KeshavSrinivasan I think it's just only suggestion... we have examples of marriage of Balarama and Kakudamis daughter... she was born earlier than Balarama... also I think we have stories of Apsaras married with Sages... in such condition also Apsaras already existed before birth of Sages...

Aug 5, 2015 at 5:23 comment added Keshav Srinivasan @Krishna Well, I think the two cases are different. In the case of the Uddhava Gita, no commentators (as far as I know) state that that verse is merely a suggestion or example. In the case of that Manu Smriti verse, all the commentaries I've looked at say it's merely an example.
Aug 5, 2015 at 5:08 comment added user808 @Keshav - May be Anushashana parva. I dont remember the exact parva. I thought it is in Shanti parva. I could be wrong. Even the uddhava gita can be dusmisssed as just being prescriptive in nature. your answer doesnt mandate it.
Aug 5, 2015 at 4:43 comment added Keshav Srinivasan @Krishna Are you referring to the Anushasana Parva, where Bhishma gives talks about wives' ages which are a third of the husband's age? sacred-texts.com/hin/m13/m13b009.htm That is based on verse 94 of this chapter of the Manu Smriti: sacred-texts.com/hin/manu/manu09.htm In any case, Medhatithi's commentary on the Manu Smriti says that verse 94 is just giving examples of suitable ages, it's not saying that everyone has to follow those ages.
