  • I assume Vishnu keeps them at bay. But you may be interested in my question here: hinduism.stackexchange.com/q/10645/36 – Keshav Srinivasan Jul 6 '16 at 3:25

@Good Guy , I think shesha and garuda are enimies in their earthely forms i.e. in this material world. But in vaikutha which is high abode , their exsists no such earthly feelings or ("Shadripus). And in vaikuntha they both are in their divine forms. – SwiftPushkar Jul 6 '16 at 6:35

When Lord Krishna has chastised Kaliya Naag and ordered him to leave river Yamuna, the Kaliya has requested to free him from the fear of Garuda. Then Shri Krishna has told him that Garuda will not attack on you because you have my footprints on your head.

This incident is mentioned in Srimad Bhagavatam as:

SB 10.16.63 — Out of fear of Garuḍa, you left Ramaṇaka Island and came to take shelter of this lake. But because you are now marked with My footprints, Garuḍa will no longer try to eat you.

And in Harivamsa as:

When you live in the ocean, seeing the marks of my feet on your hoods, garuDa, the enemy of serpents will never harm you.

And as we know that Shri Krishna is the incarnation of Lord Vishnu and Garuda is the mount of Lord Vishnu and Shesha is the bed of Lord Vishnu.

So, in this way Garuda cannot kill or fight with Shesha.

You cannot equate demon Kaliya with Adi Sesha. They are different from each other. – Good Guy Jul 8 '16 at 10:24
  • @GoodGuy I am not comparing Kaliya Naga with Adi Shesha. I am just saying that if Garuda cannot kill Kaliya Naga just because of the footprints of Krishna, then how can he fight with Adi Shesha upon whome Lord Vishnu sleeps. – Triyugi Narayan Mani Jul 8 '16 at 10:28
  • You are logically right. But is there any vedic reference to Garuda and Adisesha's relationship? – Good Guy Jul 8 '16 at 16:12
