How can I learn about my ancestry with my Kula Deva, Gotra, Sub-Caste, and Caste, along with ancestral location etc.?

I know little to nothing about my ancestry. But I do know my family's Kula Deva, my gotra, my Sub-Caste, and my caste.

I wanna know more about my ancestors, where they originally used to live, what they used to do (I think it is obvious because of my caste but anyways).

  • The pandits at your kula deva temple might have records of your ancestors. You may ask them. If you are from north India you can check in Haridwar, they have records going back to thousand of years. I got my Veda and Shakha through a Pandit who had such records, referred to me through many links.

  • What about South India? My Kula Deva temple is most likely Arasavalli Surya Narayana Swami Temple. Would they have records? I was told my shakha and veda from relatives. @Lokesh May 29, 2022 at 15:48
  • @Apastamba_01 You can infer the location of your ancestors from Veda shakha and ritualistic beliefs of your ancestors through गृहसूत्र you follow. The philosophical beliefs are hard to infer as it is independent of jati generally.

  • @Lokesh We fellow Apastamba Grihasutra, Apastamba is generally said to have lived in the Krishna Godavari Basin. But I am confused how some of my relatives are in Odissa (they are still KYV Smartas tho). Anyways thanks for all the help! May 30, 2022 at 0:40
