The meaning of the word Itihasa is It happened thus. This word is made of three dhatus iti-ha-aasa. By saying so,it is declared that the stories told in Ramayana(to be specific Valmiki Ramayana) and Mahabharata are real stories which took place once upon a time and are not any made up stories. Mahabharata which is one of the itihasas is regarded as fifth veda.
